Mayor’s Arts Awards Honor Intiman Theatre, Dani Tirrell, and More

The ceremony on August 29 honors the 2019 award recipients: Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA), Intiman Theatre, Delbert Richardson, Marcie Sillman, and Dani Tirrell. Newly named Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith will present at the ceremony.

Five Seattle artists and arts institutions were honored with this year’s Mayor’s Arts Awards. The 2019 recipients are the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) (an innovative art gallery in Pioneer Square); Intiman Theatre (a contemporary theatre company in Seattle); Delbert Richardson (an historian, storyteller, and ethnomuseumologist); Marcie Sillman (arts and culture reporter at KUOW); and Dani Tirrell (a dancer, choreographer, curator, and maker of bold Black queer works). Newly named Seattle Civic Poet Jourdan Imani Keith will present at the ceremony.

All are recognized for shaping the city’s “arts and cultural landscape through their contributions to the community, education, arts and race and social justice.” Recipients will be honored at a ceremony held at Seattle Children’s Theatre this Thursday afternoon, and a reception following.

Mayor Jenny Durkan described the importance of the city’s thriving arts scene, noting, “Seattle’s artists inspire us, and they make our City better. These artists represent the rich diversity of talent, innovation, and passion in our communities.”

Each year, members of the public submit nominations, and finalists are selected by a panel of arts commissioners and past Award recipients. Award recipients are honored each year at a public ceremony. See City Arts coverage of last year’s ceremony here.
