HAPPENINGS

This Week in Arts: Wednesday Roundup (11/13)

Highlights this week include new works in dance, two shows supporting queer communities, and a wide array of theatre performances, from the south Sound to Skagit County.

And take note: there’s a lot closing this week, so choose wisely if you’ve missed a lot this month.

This Week in Dance

Three recommended shows of new dance works are closing this week. On the largest stage, Pacific Northwest Ballet features Locally Sourced, a triple-bill of brand-new, short works from favorite local choreographers. Locally Sourced premieres new work from Donald Byrd, Eva Stone, and siblings choreographer Miles Pertl and visual artist Sydney M. Pertl (who also curated an impressive display of visual art for sale throughout the venue). It runs through Saturday.

Need more Donald Byrd? This weekend, the prolific choreographer also shows new work at his Spectrum Dance Theater — on a much smaller stage, on the shores of Lake Washington — in Occurrence #8. It runs Thursday through Sunday. And don’t neglect the impressive visual and performative retrospective of Byrd’s work through the decades, in Donald Byrd: The America That Is To Be, on through January at the Frye Art Museum.

And Alice Gosti shares an immigrant experience through durational performance and installation in Where is home: birds of passage, at ACT. Viewers may come and go as they please during the three-hour performance windows. It runs through Sunday.

Others of Note

Continuing their runs this week are two world premieres that run through next weekend. In Mount Vernon, the new musical Pray the Gay Away targets anti-gay “conversion therapy” practices. Tickets are reasonable (and limited) throughout its run at Lincoln Theatre, available here. Closer in town, The Originals premieres at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, from Play Your Part Theatre in support of the GSBA Scholarship Fund; sliding scale tickets available here.

Openings

It’s a short list of openings this week. Opening Wednesday is Shout Sister Shout!, a jukebox musical of Sister Rosetta Tharpe at Seattle Rep; and opening Friday is Mrs. Krishnan’s Party, from Indian Ink Theatre Company and Seattle Theatre Group, at Erickson Theatre.

Last Call

Closing this weekend at smaller venues are The Thanksgiving Play at Seattle Public Theater (read NWT’s review here); the rolling world premiere of The Brothers Paranormal from Pork Filled Productions at Theatre Off Jackson; and Proof at Dukesbay Theater in Tacoma.

And closing long runs at larger venues are Dracula at ACT; The Great Moment at Seattle Rep; and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Village Theatre in Everett (read NWT’s review here).

Shows running only this week include Great Souls from the Seagull Project on Wednesday at ACT (info here); and two shows from Cornish College of the Arts: Stephen Sondheim’s Company, directed by Richard Gray, which runs Thursday through Sunday (info here), and the dance department’s fall show, performing Friday through Saturday (info here).

Wednesday Roundup is a weekly (ish) feature, with NWT’s picks for the upcoming week and recaps around town.
